Week 2. Film1( Day made of glass2) and film2 (Bridging our future) #edcmooc
Both commercial films promote products concerning mainly education, entertainment and sciences. In short, what they present is how their products could become an integral part of our daily life. Both advertisements are an example of utopia.
Regarding sciences like medicine or engineering, it seems like this kind of technology may be an ideal tool for a productive and effective result. On the other hand, as one may see in these films, education is visualized in a high tech quality level using transparent tablets and wall touch screens among others. When it comes to education a problem arises.
In my opinion both films involve the "meta learning" process . This is a concept in social psychology and education and describes the state of "being aware of and taking control of one's own learning". I took the following from Wikipedia. "You can define meta learning as an awareness and understanding of the phenomenon of learning itself as opposed to subject knowledge. Implicit in this definition is the learner’s perception of the learning context, which includes knowing what the expectations of the discipline are and, more narrowly, the demands of a given learning task."
I have heard Sugata Mitra talking about how kids may teach themselves. (I suggest that you might have a little time to watch this . https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xRb7_ffl2D0). Sugata Mitra is one of the most open minded scientists I have ever heard. However, what these two films imply is something else. The education model in the films presupposes a very expensive and, literally, fragile kind of school studies .
On the other hand there is a need of an instructor highly qualified in technology and online communication for this educational model. This instructor must also prepare a huge amount of information and recourses to be given in just one class. In order to manage all this he must have quite some time for research; considering that a teacher has to be prepared for, let's say, about 800 teaching hours per year, I do not know how might that be possible.
Both films have the intension to promote their products. To make this happen, they use the educational process as an example among other, suggesting that learning would be more challenging, interesting and a cool one. However in real world there are many to be done for adapting all these very useful technologies in high schools.
